Psychotherapists
Psychotherapy is any activity carried out using scientifically recognized psychotherapeutic methods to diagnose, treat or alleviate disorders of clinical significance for which psychotherapy is indicated.
License to practice
The legal basis for practicing this medical profession is the Law on the Professions of Psychotherapists (Gesetz über die Berufe des Psychotherapeutinnen und -therapeuten – PsychThG) and the Licensing Regulations for Psychotherapists (Approbationsordnung für Psychotherapeutinnen und Psychotherapeuten – PsychThApprO).
Anyone wishing to practice the profession of psychotherapy in Germany must obtain a license to practice as a psychotherapist (§ 1(1) PsychThG).
Temporary Professional License
The practice of the psychotherapeutic profession may also be permitted on a temporary and limited basis for a maximum period of three years pursuant to a professional license (§ 4 section 1 to 3 PsychThG). This is possible in the following cases:
- to prepare for the knowledge examination or to participate in adjustment measures to determine the equivalence of the level of psychotherapeutic training
- in the presence of a special interest
