Physicians
Medical License
The legal basis for practicing medicine is the Federal Medical Act (Bundesärzteordnung – BÄO) and the Licensing Regulations for Physicians (Approbationsordnung für Ärzte – ÄApprO).
Anyone wishing to practice medicine in Germany must obtain a medical license (§ 2(1) BÄO).
Temporary Professional License
The practice of medicine may also be permitted on a temporary and limited basis pursuant to a professional license for a maximum duration of two years (§ 10 Section (1) to (3) BÄO). This is possible in the following cases:
- to prepare for the knowledge examination to determine the equivalence of the level of medical training
- for reasons of medical care
- in the presence of a special interest
Notes on Language Proficiency
To demonstrate sufficient German language proficiency, relevant documentation must be submitted, e.g. ten years of schooling in Germany, specialized language exam, etc.. This list is not exhaustive. Not all applicants are required to take the specialized language exam. This is decided on a case-by-case basis.
